While some of these things are done automatically by good compilers, this allows the programmer to indicate where it is possible -- perhaps providing the compiler with additional opportunities to adapt the code. Further, coupled with the instrumention, the compiler can determine what is pragmatically most beneficial rather than relying on a model which may be overly simplicstic.
